$52,000

All of my medical bills have been paid. Though I wasn’t going to pursue it, I ended up with an additional $52,000 of “pain and suffering” in my settlement, which came through today.

My lawyer came to see me at work today, bringing with him this enormous check. I work at a bank, so I see these kinds of deposits every day, but those pieces of paper with numbers on them mean a whole lot more when they are mine. Most of the time, I just see currency as really dirty paper that I need to keep track of, but today I saw it as much more. Today I saw the opportunity to pay off my student loans in their entirety 12 months after graduating from college. I saw the opportunity to start building a serious savings at the age of 23. Today that piece of paper with my name on it told me that I’m going to be okay.
